Taylor Swift took a break from music this year, but the pop superstar did agree to play one concert in 2016. Two days before the 10-year anniversary of her debut album, Swift took the stage Saturday night at the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix in Texas as the event’s headliner.
The concert was previously reported as “a collection of her biggest hits from the last decade,” and Swift recently posted a few videos of her band rehearsing some of these songs. So unless she did something entirely unexpected (like maybe announce a new album?!), you could pretty much guess how the concert was going to go; she’s had plenty of successes to fill a solid set list.
But in typical Swift fashion, she threw a curveball. Along with a mix of tracks from her albums “1989,” “Red,” “Speak Now” and “Fearless,” Swift included her first live performance of her ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris’s song “This is What You Came For,” which she wrote.
“As a songwriter, the most rewarding feeling in the world is writing something and then having a crowd sing it back to you, because they know the words. It’s the coolest thing in the world,” Swift told the massive audience.
“I’ve never played this song live before. But if you know it, maybe you could sing along and then I could get to know what that feels like to have it sung back to me?” she asked, fans screaming as she launched into an acoustic piano version.
“This is What You Came For” is not exactly what you think of when you think of Swift’s list of hits – but it certainly counts. The single flew to the top of the charts this summer when it was released by Harris. Initially, he and Swift didn’t tell anyone that she wrote the song under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg.
But then Swift and Harris broke up in May, and there was apparently no love lost between the two. Swift was photographed making out with actor Tom Hiddleston mere weeks after the split. Soon after, Harris allegedly informed fans on Instagram that he was “free” and that Swift “controlled the media” after the breakup. A couple weeks later, Swift’s publicist told People magazine that Swift was the one who wrote Harris’s hit song.
Harris didn’t take too kindly to this PR move: He went on a tweet spree where he interpreted Swift’s team spilling this secret as a way to make him look bad.
“Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage though,” he tweeted, before taking a shot at her relationship with Hiddleston. “I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do.” Then, just for good measure, he added, “I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”
In addition to “This is What You Came For,” Swift performed a range of her successful singles, from the country music days of “Love Story” and “Fifteen,” to her recent pop smashes such as “Blank Space” and “Shake It Off.”
Calvin Harris broke all the rules of Taylor Swift’s world. Or did he?
