A Google search will autofill once you start typing. Here's what happened Oct. 21, 2016, when we started with "Is Trump b..." and "Is Clinton b..."(Photo: Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle)
The question "Is Clinton friends with Trump?" apparently has been asked of Google millions of times.
As has the question "Is Trump Canadian?"
Google searches, by no means scientific, can provide some insight into just what people are wondering. And the presidential election — a vitriolic and occasionally crass campaign between two unpopular candidates — has prompted hundreds of millions of Google questions about Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Can we learn anything from those searches? Maybe a little.
Regardless, at least we can inject some fun into a campaign markedly devoid of levity.
So, here's what we did at the Democrat and Chronicle.
We decided to take an open-ended question about the candidates and run it through the Google search engine from A to Z.
For example, for the Democratic candidate the question began like this: Is Clinton ... ?
Then, we typed in each letter of the alphabet individually, to see the common searches with that letter. For instance, the search "Is Clinton a ..." brought up the most searched question as "Is Clinton ahead?" We did the same search for Trump and the top-ranked question for the letter A was: "Is Trump ahead in Ohio?"
Some explaining is needed here. Using this method, the Google searches do not immediately bring up the most popular searches in each instance. But, this being an unscientific approach to an unscientific ranking, we simply used the top three responses to our questions.
If we don't list three responses here, it's either because some of the responses were so similar or Google didn't come up with three letter-specific answers about the candidates. (In some cases, there were no responses, or responses that had nothing to do with the candidates.)
So, here they are, the candidate-specific questions and the Google responses by alphabet:

The remaining alphabet provides nothing. And, let's face it, this has as many variations as questions.
For instance, the question, "Does Clinton e ...?" provides for an answer: "Does Clinton ever wear dresses?" And, the question, "Does Trump v ...? leads to this: "Does Trump vape?"
So, if bored or sick of this election, try your own version of the game by creating your own questions. Feel free to drop me the most entertaining responses.
